Spring is just around the corner and your next home improvement project is probably on your mind. If you’re one of the many homeowners in the Greater Seattle Area with a raised, or multi-story deck, one of the best investments you can make this year is installing an underdeck system.

Underdecking from Undercover Systems of the Pacific Northwest provides you with the ability to turn the space underneath your deck into a fabulous, functional outdoor living space that can be utilized year-round.  In addition, an underdeck ceiling also has the added benefit of protecting your home and deck from weather damage, and provides you with added value to your home.

Before you make the investment in a new underdeck system, we know that you may be wondering what is underdecking in the first place and how does it work? That’s why the experts at Undercover Systems are here to answer those questions for you and help you understand why a new underdeck might be right for you.

What Is Underdecking?

In short, underdecking is a modular deck ceiling and drainage system that turns that dark, damp space under your raised, or multi-level deck into a functional outdoor room.

The built in drainage system is designed to capture dirt, water, and that occasional snow melt off from between your deck panels and channel it away from your home and the underside of your deck. This provides you with a clean, dry, usable space where there was once only mud and spiderwebs. It also helps reduce rot and water damage from the water that used to get trapped on those rainy Puget Sound days we all know so well.

How Does Underdecking Work?

Underdecking consists of individual, modular ceiling panels and integrated gutter systems.

The panels cover the underside of your deck, providing you with a clean, finished looking ceiling and the first element of your new outdoor living space. They are custom designed to match the look, feel, and size of your deck, and are easily removable in the event that deck maintenance is required.

However, it is the structurally engineered, load bearing gutter system that is the key to the whole system. Not only do the integrated gutters collect water and debris from the system and channel it away from your home and the underside of your deck, they also are the support members for the ceiling panels.

No part of our underdeck system is attached directly to the underside of the deck. All installation work is done below the existing deck and deck boards. We maintain a 4 inch to 7 inch space between the bottom of the deck and the top of our ceiling. This assures that this product will not cause any harm to the deck above and provides plenty of air flow and ventilation for quick drying.

Once the system is fully connected, the debris and water that falls onto the panels will be channeled to the perimeter gutter system and through periodic downspouts attached to the system. This ensures that water falls away from the underside of your deck, keeping it clear and dry no matter what the weather.

This would be a good place to add a diagram of how the system works. If Undercover Systems already has this that would be great, otherwise Zipline might be able to create something with some guidance.
